Water Resource Protection

Project: Water Resource Protection
Clients: Cities of Lacey, Auburn, Olympia, Tumwater, Grand Mound, and Fife
Locations: King, Pierce, and Thurston Counties, Washington

Jim Mathieu was instrumental in developing wellhead protection plans for many Washington municipal water purveyors. These plans involved identifying areas in the water-supply aquifer that are most susceptible to contamination from surface sources. Possible contaminant sources included leaking underground storage tanks, industrial solvents and heavy metals, nitrates from septic drain fields and agricultural practices, and other chemicals. Work for these municipalities entailed:

Analyzing hydrogeologic characterization data
Assessing flow patterns and seasonal trends
Inventorying potential contaminant sources
Reviewing well construction data
Characterizing water quality in the supply aquifer
Delineating wellhead protection areas
Preparing a report summarizing the study results
Designing long-term monitoring programs

Jim’s work enabled these municipalities to estimate the threat to groundwater quality at each wellhead; it also helps provide an early warning of any contaminant movement toward supply wells.
